What ages does The Literacy Council serve?

Anyone 16 or older is eligible for our services. Current students range in age from 16 to 80.

What is the enrollment process?

There are three easy steps to enroll. First, the student calls The Special Services Department of The St. Joe County Library (574) 282-4655 to make an appointment. Next, the student visits Special Services for an informal interview and placement assessment. Finally, the student is assigned a volunteer tutor. Depending on the number of volunteers The Council has, it may be up to 6months before a student is matched with a tutor.

May I call on behalf of my friend or family member who needs help?

Prospective students enroll because they want to improve their skills, not because someone else wants them to. Therefore, we must speak directly to the student. You may wish to be present during the phone call to offer support to your friend or family member.

When are the classes?

There are no "classes." Students meet privately with their tutors at a mutually agreed-upon time. They are expected to meet once a week for a 90-minute tutoring session.

Where do the students and tutors meet for tutoring?

Students and tutors meet in a public location that is convenient for them both. Most tutors and students meet at the local library branches, but some work together at churches or community centers.

Is there homework?

Yes. Some work is required outside of the tutoring session.

How much does it cost?

Tutoring is provided at no charge.
