What ages does The Literacy Council serve?
Anyone 16 or older is eligible
for our services. Current students range in age from 16 to 80.
What is the enrollment process?
It's easy to enroll. Applications are available at most of the St. Joseph County Public Library
locations,, as well as the PHM Library locations. If the student needs help to complete the form, Literacy and Outreach Services
of the SJCPL Main Location can assist them.
Applications are given to The Literacy Council, and we will
contact the student for an assessment appointment.
Assessments are completed to meet the students, as
well as determine the appropriate levels of materials to provide for tutoring sessions.
Depending on the number
of volunteers The Council has, and any special meeting needs, it may be a few weeks before a match is successful.
May
I call on behalf of my friend or family member who needs help?
Prospective students enroll because
they want to improve their skills, not because someone else wants them to. Therefore, we must speak directly to the student.
You may wish to be present during the phone call to offer support to your friend or family member.
When
are the classes?
There are no forma "classes." Students meet privately with their tutors
at a mutually agreed-upon time. They are expected to meet once a week for a 90-minute tutoring session.
Where
do the students and tutors meet for tutoring?
Students and tutors meet in a public location that
is convenient for them both. Most tutors and students meet at the local library branches, but some work together at churches
or community centers.
Is there homework?
Yes. Some work is required outside
of the tutoring session.
