Since 1962, the Literacy Council of St. Joseph County has been changing lives with literacy. By serving adults and young children, the Literacy Council strives to break the cycle of illiteracy.

We currently need volunteers to tutor adult learners, serve on committees and help with projects and fundraising events.

The Literacy Council of St. Joseph County was created in 1962 as a grassroots organization run by volunteers. The agency gradually grew in organizational capacity, incorporating as a nonprofit in 1985 and hiring a part-time director in 1988. Through the support of the United Way, local libraries, area businesses, benefactors, and dedicated volunteers, the Literacy Council has leveraged community resources to improve adult literacy.

Today, the Literacy Council runs three programs: One-on-One Tutoring, Success by 6 and Su Academia Spanish Literacy. Read more about the programs here.
